Diagrammatic Logic of Existential Graphs: Insights and Prospects

Charles Peirce’s last writings on his logic of Existential Graphs (EGs), “the moving pictures of thought”, now date back a century
(“Assurance through Reasoning”, MSS 669-670, 1910-11). These manuscripts testify how wide ranging his systems actually were.
I will examine the background and the philosophical and cognitive relevance of his innovations, bringing to the fore some historical facts,
derived mainly from the Welby correspondence, that concern the ambivalent reception of EGs that rivalled the newly-emerging notions
of formal and symbolic logic. I will attend to the philosophical and cognitive significance of EGs: their iconicity, the question of the meaning
of logical constants, cognitive economy, and the failure of the Frege–Russell thesis, and point out in which sense we might take them to be,
as Peirce believed, “the logic of the future”.
