International Conference on New Culture of Signs and Media

This international conference is jointly organized by the Semiosis Research Center at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, the Discourse and Cognitive Linguistics Society of Korea, the Korean Association for Semiotic Studies and the English Linguistics Society of Korea. 

We invite the submission of abstracts for the inaugural joint international conference on the theme ‘A New Culture of Signs and Media’ to be held at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies on November 2, 2024.

We welcome abstract submissions on various themes including, but not limited to:

• Artificial intelligence (AI) and human-machine communication
• Artificial intelligence (AI) language learning and teaching
• Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine translation
• Artificial intelligence (AI) narratives
• Digital discourse
• Internet memes as a cultural discourse
• Internet and language change
• Internet, global culture and local culture
• Metaphor and metonymy in the digital age
• Cognitive semiotics in the new media
• Community and identity within the digital realm
• Cultures of the internet
• Cultural phenomenon in the digital age
• Digital semiotics
• Digital and social media and the changing nature of audiences
• Media industries and production cultures in the digital age
• New media, social media and hybrid text types
• Popular culture in the new media
• Virtual space and culture

Instructions for Abstract Submission

• We invite submissions of abstracts (maximum 300 words in length) for one of the following two categories:
1.  Oral presentations (20-minute presentation + 5-minute discussion)
2.  Posters (for a dedicated poster session)
• Abstracts should be written in English or Korean (An abstract written in Korean should include an English abstract).
• The abstract must be submitted electronically, using the electronic submission website

• Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract per author, or two joint abstracts per author.

Important Dates

• Abstract submission deadline: June 23, 2024
• Notification of acceptance: July 15, 2024
• Registration deadline: October 2, 2024
