Like many researchers who work on climate change, I spend a lot of time on airplanes.  In fact, my carbon footprint is horrific.  I feel bad about this, but not that bad.  I think that I would be a better person if I would have stayed home and addressed this conference by skype.  But I hate giving talks on skype, and I like spending time with my colleagues.  I’m also excited to see Korea.

According to John Nolt, the average American is responsible for killing or seriously harming 1-2 people with their carbon emissions.  I’m above average so my share of the carnage is certainly much greater.  Though I feel bad about myself I don’t feel like a murderer.  Why?

In this talk, I explain why I think our moral psychology does not track such judgments.  I also consider ways of trying to force our moral psychology into alignment with the math.  I argue that there are dangers in doing so, and that we would do better to think differently about responsibility.  Rather than focusing on responsibility for how climate change came about we should focus more on how we can intervene to make it manageable.   We can do this in a way, I suggest, that aligns our moral psychology with our duties.

강연자 소개

Dale Jamieson is Professor of Environmental Studies and Philosophy, Affiliated Professor of Law, and Director of the Animal Studies Initiative at New York University.  He is also Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s College, London, and Adjunct Professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia.  During the academic year 2013-14 he is a member of the School of Social Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.   Formerly he was Henry R. Luce Professor in Human Dimensions of Global Change at Carleton College, and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

He is the author of Reason in a Dark Time: Why the Struggle to Stop Climate Change Failed--and What It Means For Our Future (Oxford, 2014), Ethics and the Environment: An Introduction (Cambridge, 2008), andMorality's Progress: Essays on Humans, Other Animals, and the Rest of Nature (Oxford, 2002). He has also published more than one hundred articles and book chapters.
